At 18, Dave Brown started an apprenticeship as an electrician and then used his trade to travel overseas working in England, Canada and South Africa amongst other countries.  Upon his return to New Zealand, he worked for other electrical companies throughout Wellington before making the decision to start his own business.

During his time contracting, he was aware that often other trades people were needed to be on-site to complete a specific project, however, the client hadn’t organised the provision of these services.  Dave realised this could be a defining difference for his business and in 2006 the business became a ‘one stop shop’ where all of the trades were organised for a specific building project.

Ten years on, Dave Brown Electrical Services Ltd now have a team of six electricians and a fleet of work vehicles that cover the greater Wellington Region, providing residential, commercial and marine electrical work and lighting design and installation.

By organising the other trades so that the client does not need to take control, Dave Brown Electrical Services Ltd has increased on-site efficiency. An advantage of this being that Dave is now able to act as ‘quality control’ with the other contractors and he has, over time, built up long standing relationships with the various trades people.

Another important point of difference is that the team also provides commercial and marine electrical services.

The ‘one stop shop’ idea has worked and Dave found clients appreciated the extra effort in the completion of the project. Clients also liked staff being prompt and courteous, plus little things such as removing their shoes at the door and cleaning up after working.

Over time, the business has grown and the team has increased which allowed Dave to expand into commercial and marine work. However, Dave still maintains a tight team which enjoys their work and their clients.

Dave feels his main challenge was learning to delegate and allow others to help with his vision and business.  His father, who was a Builder and Joiner by trade, was a wellspring of information and support until he passed away five years ago.  His absence was felt deeply on both a personal and professional level.

While coping with this loss, Dave realised he would need other mentors to help his business through its next phase of growth.  The input from other electricians and business owners was invaluable and has allowed the business to expand in new directions.

Dave Brown Electrical Services Ltd goes the extra mile to provide expert advice and professional installations. The team’s prompt, reliable customer service and exceptional workmanship has won them many contracts often from the same loyal clients as well as referrals. Dave gives a $10,000 12-month guarantee for all residential, commercial and industrial customers. This provides clients with a ‘peace of mind workmanship’ guarantee and has been well received:

“Just wanted to say thanks very much for assisting us at such short notice and making our project possible after the other electrical company let us down, Thank you!!!” – Tony

“Dave was prompt in sending two of his team…who were tidy, friendly, informative and above all very professional…I would certainly use this firm again” – Barry

“This is a well-considered 100% rating.” – Erin
