Shirley and Chris McCutcheon were both in stressful management positions when they decided they wanted greater control of their futures and any business they were a part of. In 2012 they established Clean Az, based on their combined experience in the hygiene and hospitality industries.

In 2014 Shirley and Chris expanded and bought Sudz Laundrette to cater to businesses and families throughout Otago.

“We answer queries quickly and as we have a large and professional staff, allowing us to cater to large premises in a timely manner better than other companies,” says Shirley McCutcheon, manager and owner of Clean Az. “Otago culture is very Scottish and we have high expectations without a high budget. Clean Az understands this and delivers an outstanding service.”
Using decades of managerial experience, Shirley and Chris were aware of the problems the business would encounter at various stages of its development. The biggest hurdle was promoting Clean Az not only in Dunedin but throughout Otago, as well as employing reliable staff with strong work ethics.

Through chasing up references and performing background checks, the potential employees were whittled down to the very best and by using established contacts, local newspapers and online marketing services, the Clean Az name was established.

Shirley is most proud of the staff at Clean Az, who all work hard to get the job done to high standards. In the course of a year, “we have very few problems.”

Twenty jobs have been created in the company, employing local people who are aware of the standards Dunedin businesses expect. The result has created an impressive reputation with hundreds of clients returning to Clean Az for regular cleaning services:

“We employed Clean Az again to clean all the carpets recently in our hotel. We always find Clean Az prompt, super-efficient and Chris is extremely thorough with his carpet cleaning. Clean Az is very competitive with their pricing & you can call them at any time & they come regardless what the job is to do. We would recommend Clean Az to be your next Carpet Cleaning Company” – Nathan Park, General Manager The Victoria Hotel, Dunedin

“We are a Hospitality business located in the Octagon, Dunedin, operating three separate venues, being Ratbags & Innocent Bystander, 10 Bar and Craft Bar. We have been most happy with the service and support offered by Clean Az since they have been our cleaning contractor for our businesses. We require fast, efficient, cost effective and trustworthy companies to partner with to ensure our hospitality environment operates at optimum levels. Clean Az meet every cleaning requirement, quickly, professionally and without fuss. They come highly recommended by our organisation.” – Phil Ellis, General Manager Ellis Hospitality Group, Dunedin

“We have been using Shirley and her team since 2007, and have found their professionalism and quality of work to be exceptional. Shirley always goes the extra mile to ensure they continually supply their clients with outstanding service. The teams reliability, flexibility and efficiency have set them apart from other cleaning companies we have used in the past” – Tasi Mala, Property Manager Student Accommodation Ltd

Clean Az have trained their staff to New Zealand Industry Trade Organisation standards and provide them on-the-job training with the opportunity to take on auditing roles as their experience grows. Shirley and Chris do not use any staff that have not been security checked to give every customer peace of mind when they employ the services of Clean Az.
Clean Az sponsors West Taieri Rugby Club and supports children’s education in Dunedin, including sponsoring school sports events and fundraising for school libraries. Shirley and Chris also give away Clean Az and Sudz Launderette vouchers to competitions in the local community.
