Owner Peter Jackson has been plumbing for 36 years and had always had the goal of starting his own business and offering others the same chance he’d been given with apprenticeships.

Established 19 years ago, Peter Jackson Plumbing Ltd started as a 1-man band and Peter’s reputation quickly spread and the business grew, though not without challenges along the way.

As Peter says: “It is one thing to be good in your profession…but it is another to take on the challenge of staff and running a business successfully…There has been huge financial input to have correct equipment, vehicles and tools.”

In 2006 the market crashed suddenly and they had to immediately diversify away from new homes to ensure business remained alive. Today, the company has a fleet of 7 vans and 10 staff with a diverse workload – they’ve completed some major projects and achieved some prestigious awards along the way too.

Their broad range of qualifications and skills, and great service makes them a one-stop shop that can offer a 24 hr emergency service.

And as the 2016 NZ Master Plumber of the Year customers can have huge confidence!

They installed the Solar System at Otaki Swimming Pools – the largest install in NZ at the time, so it really is a case of ‘no job is too small or too big’.

As business grew Peter learnt to manage his business and develop essential business skills with the help of business coaches to guide him.

But when the market crashed in 2006 that was a whole new challenge that Peter needed to adapt to.

They sought out more maintenance work and concentrated on marketing the business. They joined 2 BNI chapters and worked with Web Genius on a new website to target new clients and gain more repeat business.

Then Peter started to project manage entire bathroom renovations, handling all the other trades so that the customer didn’t need to organize each separately. Now Peter Jackson Plumbing project manage both bathroom and kitchen renovations, as well as the solar water heating, roofing, gasfitting, plumbing, and drainlaying.

By being reliable, prompt, respectful and doing an expert job, Peter Jackson Plumbing has grown into the one-stop shop it is today.

Most important is keeping staff safe by providing courses on first aid, working at heights, confined spaces, etc. Staff also have to do keep their licenses current with courses each year supported by the company.

Then there is the use of many local sub-contractors.

They are involved in Youth Quest, Zeal, Habitat for Humanity, and the Mega Mitre 10 Charity House Build Project, and along with providing apprenticeships, Peter Jackson Plumbing are a valuable asset to their community.
