Tree Wise Men is a locally owned and operated business which has been operating in Bay of Plenty since 1999. Our small team of 15 staff offer a professional and friendly service to clients around the Bay of Plenty.
Inspired by my father who always had great ideas of going into business for himself. Unfortunately, this never eventuated due to an illness which he did not recover from. This made me realise that I needed to take the opportunity and when the opportunity arose, I grabbed it with both hands and have not looked back since.
Confidence in myself to take on the challenge and learning not to worry when the work loads lighten…..in fact these have turned out to be opportunities to take a breather.
Some of the biggest challenges have been taking on jobs that appear way beyond our capability. However if you break the projects down to smaller components, plan each stage and get great people behind you most things are achievable.

An example of this was taking on a job to remove 18 large mature exotic trees from sensitive archaeological sites on Mauao (Mt Maunganui). This work needed to be undertaken without any direct felling and with absolute minimal disturbance to the sensitive site.

At first visit this appeared very daunting, however after some thought and collaboration with another similar business TWM came up with a plan. Planning started in Feb 2022 with 6 months of organisation to successful completion of the job in July 2022. We came up with a proposal to use the largest commercial helicopter in NZ (Black Hawk) which operates out of Whakatane, to lift out sections of the trees as the arborists in the trees cut each piece. This scale of work had never been carried out in New Zealand and is possible a world first.

This work was successfully carried out by Tree Wise Men in conjunction with an excellent team of contract arborists, big machine contractor and a professional helicopter pilot and Black Hawk Helicopter.

This job was months in the planning, coordinating arborists, contractors, meeting all the Health and Safety requirements and of course the weather and fitting in with the general public.

We are currently in a period of perseverance which will continue for some time yet. Covid has been a very difficult time for our businesses. TWM has been lucky not to be short of work but other challenges have arisen and continue to make running a business very difficult.

Covid presents its own challenges with sickness, isolations and trying to operate during minimum approach distances.

Also related to Covid is staff shortages, material shortages, long lead times for product, unavailability of product.

TWM has had to persevere through this time and we continue to forge on head trying our best to meet our clients needs.

TWM is gaining a reputation for outstanding professional service leading to constant demand for our services. Below is a selection of the various works carried out over the years. Many more can be provided if necessary.
