USA, most innovative portable display award in 1998 for our bannerstand invention.
In the mid 1990s I wanted to develop an idea I had for a new display system, a Pull Up bannerstand. This was a world first invented here in NZ and became a big seller around the world. This success evolved into an aching desire to live a life of personal empowerment. In other words, to control my own destiny and that of my family.
The challenges to develop my idea for a bannerstand nearly broke me, both personally and financially. At one stage we were three months away from losing our house, not good for any relationship or mental state. It took a year trying to make the first bannerstand version work, then another year to get it into production, then another year of knocking on doors, making phone calls, and endless emailing to prospects. Then we sold one, then four sold, then one hundred, then thousands around Australia, Europe and North America. My description of “overnight success” – 4 years!
Once we became successful with the bannerstand product, a French company claimed they had a similar product and started a personal action against me which to my mind was complete nonsense, it was a totally different product. They placed their claim through the French Government, but after we finally secured an international Patent their activities ceased. It cost a lot of money and many sleepless nights but we got through it. Then after a few years competition reared its head, which of course always happens with anything new. After about 5 years our sales were decimated after the Chinese came out with cheap retractable systems, so we pivoted into printing fabric locally and importing premium hardware. We utilised the (very new and untried) concept of “Google Search” to attract new business, previously all ‘searching’ was done through the Yellow Pages. This strategy worked well. After about 20 years we still rank highly with Google. The NZ company that created our web site was Web Genius, we are still with them.
It took three years to develop and take to market my bannerstand concept. They were the hardest years of my life, incredibly gruelling with endless setbacks. Starting a new business is difficult and very draining on mental health, family, and finances. Unless you can see the ‘End Vision’ then don’t do it! Unless you have unbridled Passion then don’t do it! Unless you have Intestinal Fortitude then don’t do it! Unless you can ‘Read’ people then don’t do it!
People tell me, oh you are lucky to have got where you are. Luck? I wrote a book about luck, called “The Luck Formula”. Luck has nothing to do with it. First prepare mentally for what you desire, imagine it, write it down and reflect daily about it. Then watch opportunity cross your path. Then the hard stuff starts but the rewards will be proportionately greater than the setbacks ever will be.
One could say success should be measured in numbers. Turnover, net profit, day to day production efficiencies, growth. Is a company that went from $100k turnover to $200k pa a success? Or one that went from $1m to $1.5m a success? How is a level of success therefore rated? It can’t solely be determined by numbers alone. My definition of success is – “The progressive realisation of a worthy affirmation, goal, or dream”. Mix that with enough cash to live comfortably whilst enjoying family and friends, that’s a nice balance for me.

2 Full time, sub contracting 5-7 on a daily basis.
We use a mix of contractors. All have strong relationships developed upon a mutually beneficial basis. Price & product benefits accrue as a result of these long term connections and as a result it wouldn’t be wise to share their names in public.
The team are regularly being brought up to speed on printing processes and techniques by the machine manufacturers. I handle the sales side.
We have hundreds of reviews and testimonials from our 26 years in business, but the best form of independent review is Google. We have a 5 Star rating.
Time off when I want it!
We donate to two local and one national organisation.
We do give, however…, that’s such a subjective subject. Everyone has their own idea of how much they contribute back to a community. One person may give an hour a week to a cause, another gives financially. Once the exact nature of ‘giving back’ is put down in writing then people make an assumption about whether that is a satisfactory amount, or not, based on their own idea of ‘giving’.
