We had a business partner who was having a number of personal issues  for 7 years from 2001 until we parted ways at the end of 2008. His demons proved disruptive not just for our staff at the time, but it had also started to affect our reputation/relationship with our clients and eventually, it became the nemesis that destroyed our business partnership.

The building we were occupying at the time belonged to his family, he changed the locks and we were basically locked out as a result of his paranoia setting in, thinking that we were trying to take control of the company and oust him – which was not true. During this time, I was a stay at home mum to our 2yr old son, while my husband handled the work situation and trying his best to make it work under the circumstances.

My husband had always been in Sales – and had been in the Photocopier industry for over 20 years and he was very good at what he did, winning many accolades and awards within his own Sales team as well as being recognised nationwide in the companies he worked for, prior to taking on a business partner. During all the problems he encountered during the business partnership, he never lost sight of where he wanted to be and why he went into business to begin with which at the time of signing the deal, we had no inclination that there was trouble brewing behind the scenes.

When things turned pear shaped, he was faced with the possibility of returning to work for someone else in a Sales force environment, and having to report to a Sales Manager just didn’t cut the mustard anymore as that would be a step backwards for him as well as our family, so we mulled over what to do next. It was unsettling times with a young family and losing something he’s worked hard to build. Luckily for us, my in laws saw the dilemma we were in and took that as an opportunity to invest in the future of their son and his family, so they offered us a loan and encouraged us to take the bull by the horns and start our own business and BOOM! – NZ Copier Systems was born – March 2009.

When we started NZ Copiers, we had many challenges to overcome including finalising the business details split from the old business, dealing with ongoing accusations and threats occurring from this and that from our old business partner and the icing on the cake was starting a brand new venture from scratch, in the middle of a global economic financial crisis in 2009 & half way through the construction of a new family home. We needed to rebuild our client base as we had lost half during the split, set up the legal business requirements, finding a building to lease, sort staff issues/obligations to name a few. With the restraint of trade in place for quite some time, my husband worked hard and got in front of existing customers, smoothing things over with the working relationship and allaying fears that customers had once the news went out that the business partnership had been dissolved – As far as we knew, it was business as usual – stressful, but we were doing everything in our power to ensure what was going on remained in the background as we moved forward with our new venture. I’m not sure how we survived that time, but the support we received from our families was incredible. I integrated fully into the business not long after we got it off the ground, not knowing anything about the Photocopier Industry, nor anything about running a business .. and I’m glad I did. We have grown from strength to strength over the 10 years and I’m so proud of where we are from where we started.
We lost a BIG client – a few years after we started NZ Copiers. This was a huge blow to our client base as they have been a client of ours for many years. They had proven their loyalty to our company and we provided them with top notch service, unfortunately the issues were outside of our control being a machine manufacturer issue and as solid as our working relationship was with this client we were unable to salvage and continue this partnership. As a result, a huge chunk of our profit was gone resulting in a significant amount of financial uncertainty and we had to work very hard to recoup this by – rebuilding our client base.
When you own a business – and both you and your spouse are heavily involved – perseverance and overcoming adversity are words that become a staple in your vocabulary wardrobe. You have to keep going. You have to fight on and most importantly, you have to be seen as a leader to motivate and support your staff, even when all you want to do is stay in bed, eat junk food and watch Netflix the remainder of the year. Failure is not an option so, you put on your big girl knickers, fix your tiara and soldier on.
Profit keeps growing, the business has tripled in size we’re looking to take on more staff because of the growth we’re experiencing and we’re retaining 90% of our existing client base – that makes me happy because if our customers are happy, they remain loyal.
The fact that we are able to do our part for society and our community by offering employment opportunities. We look after our staff very well – they are our biggest asset! If they’re happy, they work hard and remain loyal to our cause.
