As part of a small community of Certified Financial Planners who works across multiple financial service products, i provide advice and solutions across all financial services, rather than specializing in one or two areas. The benefit of this, is rather than focusing on getting someone as much debt as possible to buy a house, I help customers to understand other areas of their finances that also need to have attention paid to, so that informed decisions can be made.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

I haven’t entered into any awards. Most awards in my industry focus on one area of financial advice, such as Top Mortgage Brokers are measured on the volume of mortgages they write, Top Insurance Advisers are awarded on the volume of Insurance business they write. My belief is that its really hard to measure what I do and compare that with others in the industry. My reward is the gratitude of my clients, when I help them. Thats usually enough for me.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please describe why you decided to go into business for yourself.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
I worked in a bank for a long time, after a while I realized that the products and services available at that one institution, were not suitable for everybody. So becoming an independent financial adviser with access to multiple product providers, enabled me to provide a wider solution to customers, and helped to provide a great advise to all of their finances. (I don’t like using the word holistic)<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please describe some of the challenges you needed to overcome to get your business off the ground.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
Leaving a well paying bank job that provided financial security was a hard decision. I sold my home and rental property to provide the cash I needed to support my family, and also to fund getting the business off the ground. It wasn’t just about getting new clients, but a lot of energy is invested in setting up systems and processes, navigating the minefield of regulation of Financial Advisers, the unique GST issues of the business. A lot of things came at me and I was often a deer in headlights who has been pushed into a river and didn’t know how to swim! It was very stressful and took a toll on mental health, and as a consequence my relationship with my loved ones. I had to seek help to develop tools and strategies for managing this. I’m proud to say that today I feel like a much better human being as a result!<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please tell us about an example where you managed to overcome a significant challenge that stood in the way of your business success.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
The mental health thing was the biggest challenge. Previously I felt that i was ok and normal. Its not until someone holds a mirror up to your face and lets you know that how you are feeling and dealing with things may be something to explore further. It has taken a lot of time and energy to get on top of it. Many times I wanted to throw the whole thing in, and go live in a van by the beach.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please explain how perseverance or overcoming adversity has been necessary for you to make a success of your business.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
To start with, I had an attitude of just charging ahead, not letting anything stop me I’m sure with any business there are times where you’ve put a lot of work into something, and it falls through. This is the case when it comes to arranging home loans for people. You put a good 5-10 hours into a person, and it goes nowhere. It really messess with your emotions when it happens too often So many times I wanted to chuck it all in.
\nMy wife has been the one who has been there for me, supporting me, encouraging me, rebuilding me when I was broken.
\nI haven’t done it all by myself, I couldn’t have done it all by myself. She should be the person nominated for an award.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>What business success have you achieved to date? <\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
Still Here, Still in business, making good coin. I’ve got plenty of Google Reviews from clients who think I do a good job, so that keeps me going<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>What are you most proud of in relation to your business?<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
In the mortgage broker space, there are a lot of brokers in Tauranga.
\nI feel good when I have someone contact me, who has researched who they want to deal with and they choose me.
\nOne of the greatest feelings in the business, is taking a first home buyer from thinking about whether they could buy a house, to having them actually buy a house. I know i’ve been a big part of their journey, and a trusted adviser to them. I’m very privileged to be a part of their success.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Obtaining tertiary qualifications- such as Certificate in Financial Services, as well as ongoing mentoring and educating the team through sharing war stories.
