I haven’t won any specific business awards. However, I did achieve a significant milestone by founding the ‘Acupuncture for Veterans’ Mental Health’ project, showcasing my dedication to leveraging acupuncture for the well-being of veterans. Additionally, I was honored to be invited to present at Acupuncture NZ’s AGM in 2022, an opportunity that highlighted the recognition of my expertise and contributions in the field of acupuncture.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please describe why you decided to go into business for yourself.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
I transitioned into entrepreneurship driven by a profound sense of purpose and compassion for improving people’s health and well-being. Previously, my career was in computer programming and database development. However, I discovered my true calling lay in returning to my family’s roots of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice. This ancestral connection, combined with a deep-seated desire to positively impact individuals’ lives through TCM, propelled me to establish my own business dedicated to holistic healthcare and wellness.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please describe some of the challenges you needed to overcome to get your business off the ground.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
When I arrived in New Zealand, I faced a significant language barrier due to my limited proficiency in English. In the year 2000, I initially approached the founder of the New Zealand School of Acupuncture but eventually chose to pursue studies in computer science. It wasn’t until my English proficiency improved significantly and I seamlessly integrated into life in NZ that I made the decision to pursue Acupuncture. This journey spanned from 2009 to 2017, during which I dedicated eight years to acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge in Acupuncture.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, I embarked on the challenging path of establishing my business, a journey marked by relentless determination. The process involved a steep learning curve, during which I honed my expertise in TCM acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Simultaneously, I immersed myself in the operations of running a clinic, aiming to excel in every aspect of my profession.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please tell us about an example where you managed to overcome a significant challenge that stood in the way of your business success.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 lockdowns, I seized the opportunity to further my knowledge and skills in traditional Chinese medicine. Over a span of two years, I devoted extensive time to studying Chinese herbal formulas, particularly focusing on Kampo therapy, through a rigorous post-graduate internship with Nigel Dawes at the NYC Institute. Despite the limitations of the pandemic, I engaged in this learning experience primarily through online platforms, supplemented by two trips to Brisbane, Australia, in January 2020 and August 2022.<\/p>\n

Armed with this enriched expertise, I redirected my efforts to aid individuals grappling with post-COVID issues and various health concerns, particularly focusing on digestive health and women’s health. By tailoring Chinese classical herbal formulas to each individual’s unique constitution and symptom patterns, I witnessed numerous successful cases of improved well-being and health outcomes, reaffirming the potential of traditional Chinese medicine in addressing contemporary health challenges.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Please explain how perseverance or overcoming adversity has been necessary for you to make a success of your business.<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>
Perseverance and overcoming adversity have been integral to my journey in establishing a successful business. Initially, my transition from a career in computer programming to embracing my family’s traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice was met with challenges. Language barriers and a shift in professional domains were significant hurdles I had to overcome. However, my determination to pursue my passion for promoting health and well-being drove me forward.<\/p>\n

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, new obstacles emerged. The inability to conduct in-person consultations and disruptions in traditional learning formats necessitated a rapid adaptation to online learning and remote interactions. Despite these hurdles, I persevered. I dedicated two years to extensive study, focusing on Chinese herbal formulas and Kampo therapy. This was supplemented by international travel and remote learning opportunities.<\/p>\n

My dedication and resilience paid off as I emerged with an enriched skill set, better equipped to address contemporary health issues. By leveraging my newfound expertise and experiences, I successfully transitioned into aiding individuals suffering from post-COVID issues, digestive health problems, and women’s health concerns. Through the personalized prescription of Chinese classical herbal formulas, I witnessed positive outcomes and a growing roster of satisfied clients.<\/p>\n

The path to success in my business has indeed been challenging, but each obstacle I encountered served as a stepping stone. Every instance of adversity only fueled my determination to persevere, adapt, and ultimately flourish in my mission to improve people’s health and well-being through traditional Chinese medicine.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

To date, one of my significant business successes has been successfully addressing mental health issues within my practice. This includes conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, and concussion syndrome. Through dedicated research and a commitment to finding solutions for each unique case, I have been able to establish a mental health project that has proven effective in improving the well-being of individuals facing these challenges.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

My recent significant accomplishment is the development of specialized expertise in effectively addressing circulation issues, resulting in notable alleviation of pain conditions and enhancement of immunity. This accomplishment has inspired me to embark on a journey to share this knowledge and expertise with a broader audience. I am currently in the process of writing a book on this subject, aiming to impart valuable insights and strategies to help individuals improve their well-being and overall health.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Being a business owner offers a range of benefits beyond financial gains. It provides me with a sense of fulfillment and purpose, allowing me to align my work with my passion for improving people’s health and well-being through traditional Chinese medicine. As a business owner, I have the autonomy to shape the direction of my practice and implement innovative approaches to patient care.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, it has enabled me to build a strong and supportive team, fostering a positive work environment and promoting professional growth and development. The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on my community and contribute to the betterment of individuals’ lives is deeply gratifying.<\/p>\n

Moreover, being a business owner has encouraged personal growth and resilience, as I continually face and overcome challenges, allowing me to become a more adaptable and determined individual. The journey of entrepreneurship has taught me valuable lessons in leadership, communication, and strategic decision-making, all of which are transferrable skills that enrich my overall life experience.<\/p>\n

My business actively contributes to various community initiatives and organizations. I have made donations to the Mary Potter Hospice, recognizing the essential support they provide to those in need. Additionally, I have been an active participant in events like the Women’s Expo, both last year and upcoming this year, engaging with the community and sharing insights on health and well-being.<\/p>\n

Since March 2023, I have dedicated two hours every Saturday to host a community acupuncture program on Koha at my clinic. This initiative is specifically aimed at supporting New Zealand veterans and individuals in the community with limited financial means. By utilizing acupuncture, we strive to assist a wide range of health imbalances and enhance overall well-being.<\/p>\n

This effort is part of our commitment to giving back to the community and ensuring that access to healthcare, particularly holistic approaches like acupuncture, is available to everyone regardless of their financial situation. We believe in the power of community and are proud to play a role in promoting health and healing in this manner.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Furthermore, I have had the privilege of being a guest speaker at several organizations including the Probus club, the Golden Age group, the Age Concern group, and retirement villages. These speaking engagements have allowed me to share my expertise, educate, and promote holistic health practices among different segments of the community.<\/p>\n

These involvements are a testament to my business’s commitment to giving back and fostering a sense of well-being and community support beyond the confines of my clinic.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In addition to my community involvement and speaking engagements, I am currently leading a team of three experts in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Together, we are collaboratively developing a no-code application designed to support TCM practice. This innovative project merges our collective expertise in TCM with my skills in computing and data analysis, marking a new endeavor to enhance and streamline traditional healthcare practices through modern technology.<\/p>\n

The aim of this initiative is to create a user-friendly application that can assist TCM practitioners in various aspects of their work, ultimately benefiting both practitioners and their patients. This aligns with our mission to continually integrate advancements and find innovative ways to improve the field of traditional medicine.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
